forget organic, reduce meat consumption to save the environment, says study

... the study, from researchers at the vienna university of technology (tu vienna), reports that in addition to leading to increased risks of certain diseases, consuming excessive levels of meat may also lead to environmental damage ... led by professor matthias zessner from the tu vienna, the research team argued that a low meat diet has substantial ecological advantages, whilst finding that switching to organic food is less effective than eating more vegetables and less meat ... study details zessner and his team calculated that in austria alone, 3600 square meters of soil are needed to feed the average person ... “this would not only lower cancer rates and reduce the number of cardiovascular diseases, the area required for the production of food would be reduced from 3600 square meters to 2600 square meters per person,” said zessner ... the researchers suggested that making the switch would also reduce energy consumption in food production, whilst considerably less fertilizer would be needed ... “our carbon dioxide emissions would decrease as well – a well-balanced diet would save a third of co2 and other greenhouse gases in food production,” they suggested ... “however, eating organic food has less far-reaching consequences,” they argued ... whilst organic food production needs less fertilizer, the lower rates of production intensity mean that even larger areas of farmland are needed, they said ... switching to organic food production would therefore even exacerbate the problem of limited cultivable land, increasing the dependence on food imports, they argued more

eu validates test methods for sports drinks contaminated with plasticiser

... producers of sports drinks , jelly and fruit pulps commonly use a palm-oil based product to obtain a cloudy appearance, but in the taiwan ese incident, manufacturers had instead used bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate ( dehp ) and - in one case - di-iso-nonyl phthalate ( dinp ) ... the new methods have been validated for a dehp range of 3 mg/kg to 100 mg/kg in sports drinks ... all three analytical methods, or standard operating procedures (sops), are based on different combinations of chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques ... worldwide concern in late may, the taiwanese authorities warned that significant amounts of phthalates had been illegally added to certain categories of sports drinks ... however, a commission spokesman told this publication that the taiwanese scare had relatively little impact on european businesses and consumers: “ the eu was only affected to a limited extent (export of some consignments of contaminated products to uk and germany) ... the information was transmitted via the rasff (rapid alert system for food and feed), the products were traced and withdrawn from the market ... they are commonly used as plasticisers, but are prohibited for use in the production of food ... the latest incident blew up when the taiwanese food and drug administration published the names of 879 products from more than 300 producers that contained high amounts of phthalates more

new fao study shows integrated food and energy crops work for poor farmers

... producing food and energy side-by-side may offer one of the best formulas for boosting countries' food and energy security while simultaneously reducing poverty, according to a new fao report published today ... the study, "making integrated food-energy systems (ifes) work for people and climate - an overview", draws on specific examples from africa, asia and latin america as well as from some developed countries to show how constraints to successfully integrating production of food and energy crops can be overcome ... benefiting smallholders"farming systems that combine food and energy crops present numerous benefits to poor rural communities," said alexander müller, fao assistant director-general for natural resources ... "for example, poor farmers can use leftovers from rice crops to produce bioenergy, or in an agroforestry system can use debris of trees used to grow crops like fruits, coconuts or coffee beans for cooking," he explained, noting that other types of food and energy systems use byproducts from livestock for biogas production ... they can then use the savings to buy necessary inputs to increase agricultural productivity, such as seeds adapted to changing climatic conditions — an important factor given that a significant increase in food production in the next decades will have to be carried out under conditions of climate change ... ifes are also beneficial to women as they can eliminate the need to leave their crops to go in search of firewood ... women in developing countries can also significantly lower health risks by reducing the use of traditional wood fuel and cooking devices — 1 ... benefiting the climateintegrating food and energy production can also be an effective approach to mitigating climate change, especially emissions stemming from land use change ... by combining food and energy production, ifes reduce the likelihood that land will be converted from food to energy production, since one needs less land to produce food and energy more

downard retail pricing and input cost volatility hit german confectioners' profits

... price cutting by food retailers coupled with substantial simultaneous increases in raw materials prices has undermined profitability in the german confectionery industry over the past 12 months, but recovery in exports has served the sector well, said the bdsi ... it notes that the prices of sugar, butter and vegetable oils and fats have also risen sharply ... the german confectionery manufacturing sector, which includes a substantial proportion of small and mid-sized companies, has not been able to pass all or part of increased raw material costs on to the purchasers, continued the bdsi ... moreover, there was additional cost pressures from the sector arising out of the fact that retail confectionery prices for 2010, citing the german federal statistical office's official figures, were generally lower than in the previous year by an average of 1 per cent ... securing a sustainable supply of high-quality agricultural raw materials at competitive prices is a high priority and the bdsi is demanding that the german government “revokes the subsidies for biogenic energy production so that agricultural raw materials will be preferentially available for the production of food ... ” “in the wake of the financial crisis, financial institutions have discovered commodities trading and their speculation is affecting developments on the commodities markets ... the trade group is also seeking increased market regulation and transparency to make it more difficult for market speculators, who themselves have no interest in agricultural raw materials, to force up the prices of food raw materials such as cocoa and wheat ... export recovery but it was not all doom and gloom for the sector in 2010, continued the trade group, with notable recovery in exports resulting in an increase of overall confectionery production of by approximately 1 ... “the overall value of the year's production increased by approximately 1 ... “overall, on the basis of the figures released by the federal statistical office, the bdsi estimates that export volumes have risen by 7 more

envision ramps up production of food grade recycled hdpe

... envision plastics has begun full scale production of its recycled hdpe plastic resin for use in food and drink packaging ... it was as far back as 1998 that the fda sent a non-objection letter to the original developers union carbide for the use of the recycled hdpe resin in food applications such as milk, water, and juice ... commercial plans over 10 years later envision has started commercial production of the resin at its reidsville, north carolina plant ... “it has only been recently that demand from consumer products companies has really started to increase,” said tamsin ettefagh, vp of sales at envision ... having achieved full production scale, envision intends to produce 18 million pounds of ecoprime this year at reidsville ... and plans are afoot to add another 18 million pounds of production capacity at its chino, california plant in late 2011 ... envision claims that ecoprime is the only fda-approved recycled hdpe available in the us for use of food and drink packaging ... recycling hdpe for use in the food industry is complicated because the resin absorbs more volatiles than other popular plastics like pet and it is processed at a lower temperature ... recycled hdpe in the uk only in the uk has another process for recycling hdpe to food grade been commercially developed, with support from the government agency wrap (waste & resources action programme) ... with the milk bottle market in the uk dominated by hdpe, the development and commercialisation of recycled hdpe has been made a priority ... the dairy industry has already reached a target of using 10 per cent recycled hdpe in plastic milk bottles last year and under the milk roadmap it is now working to increase that to 30 per cent by 2015 and 50 per cent by 2020 more

natural pigments could be produced from fungus

... biosynthesized pigments from fungi could be used as a reliable source of natural colorants, according to a new review ... researchers from denmark have stated that industrial interest in fungi as sources of natural colorants has been “revived” after dsm gained eu approval for fungal synthesis of beta-carotene ... the review, published in trends in biotechnology, outlines the key issues and trends in the production of food grade natural colorants from fungal sources, claiming biosynthesis of pigments from fungus remained a relatively unexplored resource ... “the ability of the polyketide class of natural pigments from ascomycetous fungi to serve as sustainable natural food colorants has largely escaped the attention of food scientists, both in academia and in industry, despite the tremendous economic and marketing potential,” wrote the researchers, led by professor anne meyer from the technical university of denmark ... biosynthesis currently most eu authorised natural food colorants are extracted from raw materials from insects and flowering plants ... as such, production of current natural colours can vary from batch to batch, depending on the supply of external materials and seasonal factors, state the researchers ... however, many fungi and lichens are known to naturally produce and secrete a wide range of pigments, with a considerable range of colours ... the authors noted that this method of production could minimise batch-to-batch variations ... they stated that fungal synthesis of natural colorants “has the main advantage of making the manufacturer independent of the seasonal supply of raw materials ... the aim of the new study was to review the potential of producing polyketide pigments from fungal strains in an industrial setting ... potential the authors report “tremendous potential for the development of robust fungal production systems for polyketide pigments ... ” according to the researchers, the biosynthesis of natural colorants from fungi could ensure “colorant production is accomplished under controlled conditions in bioreactors that offer the colorant manufacturer independence from the external, seasonal supply of raw materials, and potentially minimize batch-to-batch variations more

cereal prices falling, now meat and dairy cause fao concern

... global food prices have fallen this year to date as higher cereal production following 2008 spikes kick into the market place, but non-cereals are keeping them way above 2002-4 levels and there may still be trouble ahead ... inflated prices of commodities in 2008 caused disruption around the world ... in developing countries higher-priced staples led to rioting and political instability, and in developed countries too food firms saw their margins pinched as passing on all the extra costs down the supply chain was not feasible ... the 2008 story is now understood to have been caused by several coinciding factors, including greater use of grains for biofuels in the face of high oil prices, poor harvests, market speculation, protectionism, and transportation costs ... one of the responses was to increase planting and production of food crops experiencing the most stress, and the latest edition of the fao’s biannual food outlook report suggests this strategy has been successful ... "the 2008-2009 food prices boom spurred plantings and production of many crops, which has resulted in a recovery in inventories and boosting stocks-to-use ratios, a tendency likely to prevail also in 2010/11", it says ... sugar prices, too, have taken a tumble since the beginning of this year, to around half their january level when they attained a 30-year high of $583/tonne ... the effect of cheaper cereals and sugar combined put the fao’s food price index at an average of 164 points in may 2010, down from 174 points in january and “substantially less than its peak of 214 in the spring of 2008” more
